Battle of Vargas Swamp 1819
DescriptionThe Battle of the Pantano de Vargas was an armed confrontation that took place in what is now known as the Pantano de Vargas, in the township of the municipality of Paipa, present-day Boyacá, Colombia. The battle began in the morning until the afternoon of the 25th. July 1819. The opposing sides were the patriotic troops and the royalist troops in the liberation campaign for the independence of what was then New Granada, today Colombia, Panama, Venezuela and Ecuador. In it, the army of "Gran Colombia" under the command of Simón Bolívar tried to block the way for the support forces of José María Barreiro who were heading to the city of Bogotá. This was the bloodiest and most radical battle on the soil of New Granada during the liberation campaign. Thanks to this, the liberating army arrived in Tunja on August 4, 1819, and defeated the Spanish army in the battle of Boyacá on August 7, 1819.
